The Salafi Woman

The Salafi Woman Between Adherence, Negligence and Pretentious Claims
Part 2

By Shaykh Maahir Ibn Dhaafir Al-Qahtaanee

An exclusive translation for Sisters Upon Al-Istiqaamah

....It is a form of speaking about Allah without knowledge. If one was to give precedence to the opinions of the Khalaf (those who are astray) over the positions of the Salaf, if they (the Salaf) did not differ, and similarly to adopt a position which is inconsistent with their statements even though they differed. As Imam Ahmad stated (may Allah have mercy upon him) that there is a consensus that when the (Salaf) differ to refrain from any position [not adopted by them].

If you were to ask - O Muslimah- [by saying that] Allah commanded us to obey Him and His Messenger (sallaallaahu alayhi was salam ) and no one else even if it is a companion.

Then I would respond to you by saying that obeying the companions, the rightly guided predecessors in their understanding and verdicts is the way to completely obey Allah and His Messenger.

Allah said what is translated to mean:

And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has been made clear to him, and follows other than the way of the believers; We will direct him towards the path which he has chosen, and burn him in Hell - and what an evil destination. [Suratun Nisaaʾ4:115]

And it was reported by Abu Dawud in his Sunan (hadeeth collection) that Mu'awiyyah Ibn Abi Sufyan stood up amongst us and said: “Indeed the Messenger of Allaah (sallaallaahu alayhi was salam) stood up before us and said: “Verily, those who preceded you from the people of the book divided into seventy-two sects; and this nation will divide into seventy-three sects. Seventy-two of these sects will inhabit the Hellfire and one will be in Paradise, and this is the Jama'ah.”

In one narration it was said: “Who are they?” And the Prophet responded, “They are those who are upon that which I and my companions are upon.”

So any opinion which is ascribed to the religion as an understanding of a particular text which opposes their understanding (i.e. the companions), then it is incorrect to ascribe it to the true religion which Prophet Muhammad (sallaallaahu alayhi was salam) brought. For verily,  the Prophet (sallaallaahu alayhi was salam) made an exception when he said, “They are those who are upon that which I and my companions are upon.”

It is also narrated by ‘Abdullah that the Prophet (sallaallaahu alayhi was salam):  “The best of mankind is my generation, then those who come after them and then those who come after them. Then there will appear groups of people whose testification will precede their oath and their oath will precede their testification.”

So whoever chooses a saying which they have not mentioned and he knows their statement (on this affair) or he departs from their opinions in cases where they themselves differed with an opinion that they have not stated and he claims that this is better than their position, then he has opposed the Prophet when he affirmed superiority for them [over other generations]. And this superiority is comprehensive and applies to understanding, zuhd, piety, worship and all that is good.
