None of you should beat his wife

On the authority of Abdullaah ibn Zum'ah (May Allaah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"None of you should beat his wife like the beating of a slave then go and have relations with her at the end of the day"
(Al-Bukhaari and Muslim)

Points of benefit from Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih Al-Uthaymeen (May Allaah have mercy upon him) regarding this hadeeth:

"The meaning of this hadeeth is that along with this beating of her, he has relations with her at the end of the day. This is not befitting. That is because having relations bring about love, so for you (the man) to have relations with her at the end of the day while at the beginning of the day you beat her like the beating of a slave, with a severe beating, negates the normality (of how spouses are to live with one another). Therefore, that which is normal necessitates that as long as you are in need of enjoying her companionship, you should not beat her with this type of beating which will have a negative effect upon her heart and love for you. This is from the good teachings of the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) for His nation. For indeed this action (of beating the wife like she's a slave then having relations with her at the end of the day) is combining between two opposites. At the beginning of the day the man beats her like the beating of a slave, and then at the end of the day he has relations with her. These are two contradictory matters."
