Piercing the Ears or the Nose of the Girl

Question asked to Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy upon him):

Q. What's the ruling on piercing the ears or the nose of the girl for the purpose of beautification?

A. That which is correct is that there's no harm in piercing the ear. That is because this is from the means by which the permissible beautification is arrived to. It is established that the wives of the Sahaabah used to wear earrings in their ears. The pain from this is a slight pain. If the ear is pierced while she is young the healing process will be quick. As for the piercing of the nose, I don't recall any statements from the people of knowledge regarding this matter. However, there's a form of changing/mutilation of the creation from that which I see. Perhaps other than us (from the scholars) may not see (the matter to be as such). If the woman lives in a place where adorning the nose with jewelry is something in which there is beauty, then there is no harm in piercing the nose in order to place a nose ring within it."
